Late in the summer of 1999, I received a tearful call from my mother. Two of our beloved friends/employees had passed away in an accident while driving our only large capacity scale testing truck.
The main motivating factor to write this review was how cramped the facility is. I spoke with someone and they brought this topic up and said its been a point of contention for years. The owner has a couple more garage bays, but those are for the family to store RV's, racing cars, and other odds and ends. They barely have enough space to work in when it gets busy, but those extra garages are off limits.
Success must always pay a cost, is never easy and rarely comes quickly. Our company has a bright future with measured expansion, balanced with controlled risk. It’s simple really: be thankful for your accomplishments, while focusing on your customers needs, but above all, provide real tangible value.
My personal balancing act intensified as business ownership and management consulting were added.

VBS has constantly reinvested profits back into the company. We don’t over extend as we have seen the lean times. Our long-time employees have seen the ups and downs; some have left and returned again. I am honored by my employees/friends.
By the early 90s, business space was nonexistent. Again, we more than doubled the square footage of the business, building in spite of the high cost of expansion debt.
This business has been a delicate balance of life. I am honored to have been charged with the responsibility of leading the business since 2001 when I purchased it from my parents. Ever since my earliest days, witnessing my parents do what I now do, I have seen the highs and lows.
Thank you for investing your time in researching this company.
The lows being, keeping the business afloat during the economic agricultural recession of the early 1980’s, Mad Cow Disease of the early 2000’s just to mention a few. During these bad times the Vande Berg’s continued to keep us all employed, we never missed getting a paycheck and we were able to provide for our families. It would have been easy for the Vande Berg’s to simply give up but they didn’t, they developed alternative products to expand their business into other areas thus diversifying their company.

I am proud to be a member of the Vande Berg Scales family and am extremely proud of how we have persevered over the years and continue to grow and prosper. It has not been easy but with the strong family backbone, excellent management and employee base we are definitely a strong force in the Weighing Industry.
I have been employed at Vande Berg Scales since 1982, this year being my 35th year of employment. When I began my career here there were only 5 other people besides the owners who worked here. I have seen this company grow from a one-man sales/service agency that started in their home back in 1964 to a thriving company that employs 45+ people full time.
By late 1987, I was burned out. For my own sanity, we closed AtoZ and I returned to VBS.
When we go to meet potential suppliers, we evaluate the facility, its employees, and look for general problems that may impact our expanding business.
From a customer point of view, it looks like Dave needs to have that banner from Office Space that reads "Is this good for the company." It seems like a decent number of ways he personally is holding the company back from expanding. The person I spoke to also said "you'd damn near get fired if you bring it up." This says a lot about the company and the work environment. I told the person I spoke to that I would say something, so this review is the result of that conversation.
Meanwhile, VBS joined an arrangement with a nationally known scale manufacturer. This association developed its own challenges. Early in 2010s, years of unrealized promises of development cooperation proved fruitless; therefore, VBS invested in its own PC-based weight indicator. In 2014, R&D investment in the company netted an NTEP approval of our own indicator. That development was pivotal, as today our in-motion based weighing is predominately based on our own weight indication.
A few things I noticed were the large amount of garbage and junk laying around the building. Old cars, snowmobiles, and a variety of junk I would be embarrassed to have around.
My name is Jeff Gross and I've been General Manager of Vande Berg Scales since 1999. It did not take long for me to realize that this company is very customer service oriented. Our customers come to us to help them solve their problems. Many times our relationship with our customers seems to be more of a partnership than a typical supplier/buyer type of relationship. Our sales and engineering departments work closely with our customers to come up with what both parties feel is the best solutions to their problems. Our production department then takes these solutions and makes them a reality. Next, our service department not only QA's and installs your equipment, but then is also available 24/7 to help you if your equipment is not functioning properly.
I have worked for Vande Berg Scales for 11 years in media promotions. I would recommend Vande Berg Scales (VBS) as a great organization to do business with due to their hard working employees, a quality product, and great customer service. The employees of VBS are caring, hard-working individuals who sincerely care about producing quality systems for our customers. Our products are designed and built at this facility and made to withstand the harsh conditions of industrial processing plants. Each of our systems is tested thoroughly in-house before being placed in service. Our service department is available 24-7 to our customers, which is our dedication to the customer. Thanks for reading!
My parents started Vande Berg Scales (VBS) in 1964. At first, they serviced scales on the family’s dining room table. My childhood living space was inseparably intertwined with business. Employees bustled through our home and lives.
I have seen this business go through some very high as well as some very low periods.
A new business facility and property soon followed, but in 1985, the future for a scale company involved primarily in agribusiness was bleak. The stress the family endured at this point will always stay with me. The family decided the best way to avoid business defeat was to expand into the Denver area. Dad and mom sold my grandparents’ home to finance AtoZ Scales of Denver, which I ran, alone.
Are we perfect? Unfortunately no, but we really do try. Sometimes our solutions do not go accordingly to plan, but situations like this is when the people of Vande Berg Scales really stand out! We're big enough to get the project done, but small enough to really care. We come up with contingency plans and overcome the obstacles that would otherwise spell defeat. Our customers know that we do not consider failure an option and depend on us to carry their projects to success.
Early 2000s investments included space for a parts department, office mezzanine and 5 additional fabrication bays.
I visited Vandeberg Scales in 2016. It is your typical mom and pop company with its fair share of problems. I normally don't write reviews, but thought I might in this case.
I am owner and CEO of Vande Berg Scales. I believe you should know a little about our history as opposed to an uninformed glimpse.
This review is my personal opinion and not that of the company that I work for which will remain unnamed.
Every employee at Vande Berg Scales knows that if we take care of the customer, everything else will take care of itself.
By 2001, my parents’ business was ready for an ownership change. I signed on for 30 years of business debt and a lease for a portion of the building and property, cementing my business life’s direction.
What looked to be a sure thing was instead the opposite, as AtoZ was born a mere 2 weeks too late to make the business yellow pages. I received first hand education on the value of a customer as I had to fight for each one in Denver for 2 solid years. This was profound to me as VBS had customers by default.
The highs being what we are currently experiencing; record amount of orders for custom made weighing systems; exciting new products such as the industry only Wash Down Rated Automatic Weigh Price Labeling unit that was developed exclusively by Vande Berg Scales; VBS NTEP approved Weight Indicator; In Motion High Accuracy Monorail Scale, Trolley Vision Carcass Tracking; once again, all above mentioned specialized products developed exclusively by Vande Berg Scales. We also manufacture several other products such as sortation systems, labeling systems, conveyor scales, enclosures, conveyors, just to mention a few; along with a 24/7 service staff to support our customers. Check us out you will see that we not a typical “mom and pop” organization.
Throughout this business life, we’ve enjoyed proving the naysayers wrong through actions; ignoring those who say that we’re too small or insignificant or incapable of doing what we believe we can do. Henry Ford was correct, “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” We know we can.
Innovations and product development were intense as VBS produced custom products for many of the food industry giants.
By the late 90s, VBS gained new traction by embracing the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) after two years of lobbying and petitioning. The process required rigorous testing. This program approved VBS’ product to be used for legal-for-trade purposes in all 50 states.
